Things to Do in and from Ozamiz City

I had the opportunity to visit Ozamiz City in Misamis Occidental in one of the media trips I was invited to. It was a nice experience to explore a new place in Mindanao again.

Our group spent a few days in the region visiting different places.

Things to Do in and from Ozamiz City, Misamis Occidental

Ozamiz is a city in Misamis Occidental. It was a small Spanish town known as Misamis some centuries ago but later grew in size and prominence. The Subanon people were its original settlers. The Spanish government during colonial times thwarted the pirates. They had a fort built in the 18th century to prevent future attacks. Misamis became a chartered city in the late 1940s. It was then renamed to Ozamiz after the local hero Jose Ozamiz. My first impression of Ozamiz was that it's a laid back city. It felt so far away from the hustle and bustle of bigger cities in Mindanao like Davao, General Santos or Cagayan de Oro.

These are some of the things to do in Ozamiz City with a few day trips on the side.

Cotta Fort & Shrine

Cotta Fort The Wandering Juan

This fort dates to the mid-18th century. The Spanish colonizers at the time used it to defend against invaders. Take your time exploring this relic of a bygone epoch. It isn't big but it's worth a trip while you're in the city.

Rodriguez Ancestral House

Rodriguez Ancestral House The Wandering Juan

This old house is a fine example of Spanish era architecture. It is a bahay na bato with two storeys. It has capiz shell windows and coral stone walls. You'll need permission to enter and explore.

Immaculate Conception Metropolitan Cathedral

The Wandering Juan

This church dates to the 18th century; however, you won't see much of its original structure today. It has been reconstructed and renovated over the centuries. It is home to the 18th century image of the Birhen sa Cotta.

Clarin House of Suman

I didn't like suman when I was a child, but I did start to like it when I was already an adult. Clarin House of Suman is a specialty pasalubong store where you can try and buy different suman flavors. It provides income for some local families as well.

Jimenez Church

Like in many other provinces in the Philippines, Misamis Occidental is home to a few centuries old churches, vestiges of the country's colonial past. Jimenez Church is a lovely Baroque structure that dates to the 19th century. The interior has gothic-inspired pillars and religious paintings covering its ceiling.

Caluya Shrine

Caluya Shrine The Wandering Juan

Located in the scenic countryside of Sapang Dalaga, Caluya Shrine will make you think of its counterpart in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). Our group took the relaxing cruise to reach the revered statue. The area was quaint and quiet with a few locals and fishing boats here and there. Atop the hill, we were blessed to see beautiful views of the surroundings. The shrine is also a popular pilgrimage site.

Hoyohoy View Deck

Hoyohoy View Deck The Wandering Juan

Located in Tangub City, this view deck is a possible day trip from Ozamiz. It provides beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. The fresh, cool air is refreshing and sort of reminds me of the provinces in the mountainous regions of Luzon. It's a great break if you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Ozamiz City and the other attractions in Misamis Occidental are worth a look if ever you find yourself in this part of Mindanao. It's a laid back city and is a hub for exploring other attractions in the region.
