How to Get to Bega Falls, Agusan del Sur

It took some years but I returned to Caraga as part of a mini-trip. I combined Davao de Oro and Agusan del Sur for this adventure. I set my eyes on a few waterfalls and to tick off a couple of provinces I have yet to visit.

Bega Falls The Wandering Juan

I visited Bega Falls and Tugonan Falls after seeing Awao Falls in Davao de Oro.

Chasing Waterfalls in Agusan del Sur

Agusan del Sur is more famous for the Agusan Marsh. However, it's also home to a few waterfalls worth checking out.

I approached a group of baobao (tricycle) drivers to ask if one of them can take me to the waterfalls on my list. There was a bit of back and forth but eventually one of them agreed to the price I was willing to pay.

It was a long-ish drive from Prosperidad to Bega Falls. It was raining for parts of the trip even when I arrived at the waterfall. There wasn't much hiking involved, mostly ascending and descending rocks and concrete stairs.

Upon first glance, it seemed like an ordinary waterfall with one big pool and a small cascade. However, the staff at the park told me I can go up to see the other tiers. When I went up a flight of stairs, I was wowed with what I saw. It was drizzling but that didn't stop me from taking a dip into the cool waters of the pool below the powerful cascade.

I explored the different tiers of the waterfall and left with a good impression of what Agusan del Sur had to offer local and foreign tourists.

Tugonan Falls

Tugonan Falls was a pleasant surprise. I was already wowed with Bega Falls and Tugonan was like the extra sprinklings on an already sumptuous cake. It had a pretty local feel with I assumed very few tourists outside the region. It stopped raining when I went. I took my time taking many photos and just admiring the views. A few people dove into the clear waters and just generally lounged around.

Much like Awao Falls, it takes time and effort to visit both Bega Falls and Tugonan Falls in Agusan del Sur. The ideal jump-off point for both places is Prosperidad in Agusan del Sur. The closest airport is in Butuan City or if you're planning to combine multiple provinces in one go, you can book a flight to Davao City.

From Butuan City, board a bus heading south such as one going to Davao City. Tell the conductor you'll alight at Prosperidad. From Davao City, catch a bus bound for Butuan City, tell the conductor you'll alight at Prosperidad.

From Prosperidad, I hired a baobao (tricycle) to take me to Bega Falls and Tugonan Falls for P1200 round trip. As of this writing there are fees you need to pay. P70 for Bega Falls and P20 for Tugonan Falls.
